Options

There are 2 different options to choose from:

(1) You bring your own container. It should be a tall vase and is used without a kenzan.

(2) You can borrow a container. There are only a limited number of containers available to borrow. Some containers will be clear glass bottles to help you see the interior mechanics (see below).

What To Bring

-The container (if you selected to bring your own container). The container should be a tall (11.5 - 12.5") , cylindrical vase. Ideally, the opening at the top is about 2" in diameter. If the opening is too big, you'll have trouble "filling" the area and with the mechanics. There should be a lip at the top so when you insert flowers the stem can "catch" the lip. For teaching purposes, Joe will use a clear bottle (so you can see the interior mechanics). As an example, a "in the Power of Seven Purple Organic Juice Blend" bottle from Trader Joes is just about the right size. You could use it clear to see the mechanics and then wrap it in Japanese paper (i.e., washi, chiyogami, etc. paper) to "transform" it in to a vase.

-Flower scissors or clippers

-Hand towel

-Paper and pen (to take notes)

-Small bucket (to carry your flowers home with you)

About This Lesson

Inclining Form (Katamukeru-katachi) expresses the beauty of the inclining appearances of flowering plants and branches. When arranged in a tall vase without the use of a kenzan, you learn the basic mechanics for the more advanced Heika arrangement.
